ASSIGNMENT 2—CURRENT EVENT SUMMARY
Assignment Overview
In order to get a better awareness of the political nature of transportation planning, it is helpful to investigate
current transportation projects being proposed, planned, or implemented by transportation planners locally
or in other cities, and to analyze any controversy that the project has generated among the public, elected
officials, or planners. This assignment will require you to conduct an analysis of such a current event.
Completing the Essay
Your task for this assignment is to review the news for examples of a transportation planning project currently
being tackled by planners. Select an event (either local or in another city) that is current (in the news within
the last few weeks) yet has been ongoing long enough for you to find adequate details and information about
the issue. Select a topic and find a minimum of 3 sources of information (e.g. news articles, government
websites, etc.).
Write an essay that clearly addresses the following:
–Briefly explain the background of the transportation planning problem being addressed
–Who are the opposing stakeholder-groups involved in this situation?
–What are the conflicting values or beliefs that are generating controversy in this situation?
Your written summary should be roughly two single-spaced pages in length. Summaries are due by 4:30 PM
on Thursday 2/11. NO late essays will be accepted.
Assignments should be submitted electronically as a Word or PDF document under the “Assignments” tab on
Blackboard before the due date and time. After that point, the link will no longer be visible.
All essays should reflect your own individual work. Direct quotes from any outside sources must be cited
properly with page numbers using a consistent citation style throughout and listed in a reference section.
Your essay should be thoroughly proofread for spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors. Essays
containing excessive proofreading errors will not be accepted for credit.
